St. George's Cathedral

If you are interested of Baroque culture and architecture you must visit a small church of St. Anthony. It is located on a hill near the old Glinyansky pathway in Lviv. Facades and interiors of this building are decorated in a beautiful staircase with a statue of Madonna.

Original semicircular facade with two towers you can see in Ursula Church. Particularly expressive sculptural plasticity observed tower facade of the church. However, the crowning achievement of Lviv Baroque, which ended the long-term development of feudalism, should be considered as an ensemble of St. George.

St. George's Cathedral was created like a monastery. The ensemble consists of the cathedral, monastic cells, Metropolitan Palace, which stands in front of the cathedral, as well as a terrace with a grand staircase. All these constructions made in the same style of the late Baroque, also known as Rococo.

The combination of traditional features with inherent to Baroque smoothly curved surfaces of the walls, architectural and sculptural decoration give the construction of particular value.

Architectural and sculptural details - moldings, capitals flat pilasters, openwork parapets, round sculpture - made of natural stone at a high artistic level. The elaborate sculpture has a specific meaning. For example, the winged figure of genius on the ladder represent the Christian virtues.

Cathedral of St. George and other great works of architecture in Lviv is the result of hard work of talented artists of many nationalities who inhabited the major commercial and cultural center of medieval Ukraine. Defensive, religious, memorial buildings, residential and rare even then public buildings reflected unpretentious needs of medieval society that have remained unchanged throughout the period of feudalism.
